Danish Integration Minister’s car burned

Wednesday, June 8, 2005

Copenhagen, Denmark – The Danish Integration Minister Rikke Hvilshøj’s car was set ablaze outside her family-home on the morning of Wednesday 8 June. From there, the fire spread to the family’s garage, and further on to the side of the house, damaging the roof above the kitchen and children’s room.

At the same time, an e-mail was sent to several media agencies, where a group calling themselves “Action Group Beate” claimed responsibility, saying it is a “protest against the racist immigrational laws of Denmark”. The police found the computer used for sending the mail within a few hours, and closed down the cybercafé whilst removing the computer.

Throughout the Danish political system politicians from both the ruling party and the opposition have expressed their outrage over the terrorism.

The insurance company is currently assessing the amount of damage done to the home, but so far they have made an estimate of £27.000, just for the house damages.

Kick The Butts Without Food Or Drugs

Short of locking yourself in a room by yourself for a month or entering into a voluntary coma, how can you quit smoking – without using drugs, eating yourself silly or alienating your friends and family? While it’s never easy (but definitely worth it), there are things you can do to make the journey a little easier.Make up Your MindOne of the best ways to quit smoking is to make up your mind to do it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you’re doing it half-heartedly or doing it for someone else, your chances for success go down. Only you know when the time is right.Talk it Up…Or NotFor some people, telling others about your plans to quit makes it more real. Then again, some people like to keep in quiet in case they don’t succeed. That’s a choice that you’ll have to make for yourself. The upside to telling people you’re trying to quit is that they’ll probably be a little more sympathetic if you blow up at them for no good reason (other than you’re missing your nicotine). And chances are, they’ll do what they can to distract you.ExerciseWhen the urge to smoke becomes overwhelming, go for a walk. Or if you can’t go for a walk, do some squats or lunges. The craving will pass and your gluteus maximus will thank you. Any kind of exercise will increase the levels of dopamine and other feel-good brain chemicals that are similar to the ones you get from smoking. Who knows maybe you’ll get addicted to exercise instead.Chew GumFor some people, smoking is a very oral thing. If you’re one of those people, try chewing sugarless gum instead. Not only will it get you through a rough spot, it will also help your concentration – so use it to concentrate on something besides smoking.Start DrinkingDrinking a big glass of water (what did you think I was going to suggest?) helps dull nicotine cravings. So do yourself a favor – drink up! A few (or a lot) of extra bathroom trips are worth it. Plus, water is good for your skin, controlling food cravings and improving concentration.Change it UpSome people associate smoking with doing certain activities. If you like to smoke when you are drinking alcohol, start having your adult beverages someplace where you can’t smoke or even give up alcohol temporarily. If you smoke while you’re driving, try wearing gloves (yes, it might look odd on a 90 degree day, but who cares) or even take the bus or carpool with a non-smoker. If you smoke to relax, try reading or meditation. If you’ve made up your mind to quit smoking, you can do it, and you can do it without turning to drugs or food. Just implement some or all of the tips above to make your transition to non-smoking more bearable.

Students in Rhode Island school attacked by wasps

Monday, September 21, 2009

Dozens of students and teachers were stung by yellow jacket wasps Monday at a middle school in Cranston. The attack occurred around 10:45 a.m., according to Ray Votto, the chief operating officer for Cranston Public Schools.

It is suspected that during a routine fire drill, students exiting the building disturbed the wasps’ nest in a field behind the school. Votto said, “When kids exited towards the back of the school building near our portable classrooms, they walked into a field and may have disrupted a nest”.

The Cranston Fire Department and school nurses responded to the scene to provide medical assistance. A total of 25 students, one of whom was hospitalized, and four teachers were stung, some multiple times. All of the students and one teacher were sent home.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

ADP says US economy lost 742,000 jobs in March

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

According to the payroll services company ADP, United States private sector employers cut 742,000 jobs in in March. The figures were almost 80,000 more than the average analyst prediction of 663,000 losses. This is the largest monthly payroll decline since January 2001, when the ADP began tracking job activity.

ADP also updated its job loss statistics for February, from 697,000 to 706,000.

“The sharp employment declines among medium- and small-size businesses indicate that the recession continues to spread aggressively beyond manufacturing and housing-related activities to almost every area of the economy,” said Joel Prakken, the chairman of the company that conducts the ADP survey, Macroeconomic Advisors LLC.

“Despite some recent indications that stock prices, consumer spending, and housing activity may be bottoming out, employment, which usually trails overall economic activity, is likely to remain very weak for at least several more months,” he added.

The US Labor Department‘s report for employment statistics for March is due to be out on Friday. Analysts predicted that the department will announce the unemployment rate increased to 8.5% with 660,000 jobs eliminated in March. However, the bad news from ADP has prompted some to think that the current forecasts are too optimistic.

Tips For Decorating During The Christmas Season

By Adam Peters

Decorating for Christmas is a family tradition filled with spirit. Here are some tips and tricks to getting the most out of the experience.

For many people, looking forward to the first day of December is something they do all year long. There are many things to think about including decorating for Christmas. Decorating on day after Halloween is even considered normal in most areas. Nevertheless, when ti comes time to decorate, you will want to make sure that the entire house gets some attention including the trees and bushes outside. You can create a scene that looks like it is out of a magazine. If you love to decorate for Christmas it can’t come soon enough for you.

Start Outside

Be sure that you take time in decorating for the holiday season. The last thing that you want is a messy, unorganized mess on your front lawn. You want people to know that you have great decorating skills as that is what they will ultimately appreciate, not overdone yards thrown together. Creating an elegant look is important. For some, the use of just white lights that twinkle is all that’s needed. Be sure to consider the bushes, your porch, the house structure and trees in your yard.

Heading Indoors

Once you step inside the door, you will need more decorating time! For example, if you have a spiral staircase, this can be an amazing place to start your decorating for Christmas. You can easily wrap the lights around the staircase all the way up. You may even want to make it a family tradition to decorate these important design elements in the home. Choose a theme, color or style to make it your own. What’s important is to make each experience in decorating a memorable one for all in the family.

Tree Cutting

Since the Christmas tree is an important part of the process, you may want to consider going and cutting your own tree down. It is a large undertaking. Pick a day that is no too cold, nor too snowy to do it. Be sure that everyone is in the right spirit to go about doing so. You can also look towards local organizations and tree sale lots throughout your area for more ideas and places to select them.

Decorating for Christmas is not done until the tree is fully decorated with all of your favorite ornaments. With soft carols playing in the background, enjoy spending time decorating for Christmas together with your family. This creates a family tradition and experience unlike any other.

What’s With Christmas Wrapping Paper?

Christmas wrapping paper tips and tricks. How to use it, store it and how to avoid needing to use it if you do not want to.

Christmas wrapping paper is one of the most troublesome of things that you have to deal with during the holiday season. You will need to select the right paper, wrap the gifts and then hope it looks good. While some may enjoy the trouble of wrapping these gifts, many are not willing to spend that extra time with it. If you only have a few gifts to tackle, the task can be fun and enjoyable but when there is a stack of gifts that need to be wrapped, the task quickly turns boring. Yet, the fact is that opening gifts that have been wrapped is well worth the work it takes to put them together especially for the giver.

Difficult To Use?

Perhaps one of the largest problems with Christmas wrapping paper is just how difficult it can be to use. Purchasing less than quality products can cause you to have easily ripped paper or the wrong size that you need. What’s more, when you are done using it, where are you going to store it? It can take a lot to plan a place to store it that will allow it to last and look great for the next year.

Saving It Tips

If you have had problems with saving your wrapping paper for the next year, here are a few things to think about. You may want to consider purchasing the specific bins that are designed specifically for Christmas wrapping paper. These will work well, because they can keep the oddly shaped paper rolls safe while still providing for their quality. In some, you can also tuck away tape, bows, scissors and other accessories for the wrapping needs next year. Best of all, if you invest in purchasing the wrapping paper after the Christmas season is over; you will be able to save money in the long run. As long as you can store is safely, then go for it.

For those that just can not stand to use wrapping paper and deal with all the trouble that goes along with it, find other solutions. Instead of Christmas wrapping paper, why not use gift bags with a Christmas theme?

For many, this is the type of wrapping they do all the time and the receiver still appreciates it. You can find a variety of sized bags to use including oddly sized items. But, even when you use other options it may be important to have a bit of Christmas wrapping paper available to use just in case.
