At least 22 dead after typhoon hits Vietnam

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Vietnamese officials have reported that at least 22 people were killed by Typhoon Ketsana, which brought torrential rainfalls and heavy flooding to the central areas of the country.

“According to our official count as of Tuesday afternoon from the local authorities, the typhoon killed 22 people,” said an unnamed official from the country’s national flood and storm committee.

According to our official count as of Tuesday afternoon from the local authorities, the typhoon killed 22 people.

170,000 people were evacuated ahead of the typhoon, which brought peak winds of 90 miles per hour (144 kilometres per hour). Typhoon Ketsana had earlier battered the Philippines, killing over two hundred people there.

Ketsana made landfall in the afternoon on Tuesday, 37 miles south of Danang, the National Weather Center reported.

Flights departing and arriving at the Hue and Danang airports were cancelled due to inclement weather, and fishing boats were ordered to return to shore.

Several of the casualties from the storm were due to falling trees and power lines. Truong Ngoc Nhi, the vice governor of the Quang Ngai province, south of Danang, said that “there’s a blackout across our entire province. Streets are strewn with fallen trees and utility poles. It looks like a battlefield.”

Provincial disaster official Nhuyen Minh Tuan said that “the rivers are rising and many homes are flooded, and several mountainous districts have been isolated by mudslides.”

English court jails policeman over insurance fraud

Thursday, July 1, 2010

A court in England, UK has jailed a policeman for ten months after he was convicted of defrauding his car insurance company.

Police Constable Simon Hood, 43, arranged for a friend who dealt in scrap metal to dispose of his Audi TT, then claimed it had been stolen.

Hood had been disappointed with the car’s value when he tried to sell it two years after its purchase in 2008. He arranged for friend Peter Marsh, 41, to drive the vehicle to his scrapyard in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Marsh then dismantled the vehicle with the intent of disposing of it, but parts were later found wrapped in bubblewrap at Ace Tyre and Exhaust Centre.

Marsh picked up the TT from outside nearby Gorleston police station. Records show mobile phone conversations between the conspirators that day in March, both before and after the vehicle was reported stolen. The pair denied wrongdoing but were convicted of conspiring to commit insurance fraud after trial.

The fraud was uncovered after Hood told former girlfriend Suzanne Coates of the scheme. It was alleged before Norwich Crown Court that he had confessed to her in an effort to resume their relationship. Coates said that after the pseudotheft, Hood told her “he didn’t want to look for it. He said it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, which I thought was a bit strange.”

You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison

Shortly afterwards Hood suggested they should become a couple once more, she said; she challenged his version of events regarding the car: “He said he did it but I couldn’t tell anyone. He said he did it with Peter. Peter had a key and took the car away and it was going to be taken to bits and got rid of so it was never found.”

Hood was defended by Michael Clare and Marsh by Richard Potts. Both lawyers told the court that their clients had already suffered as a result of the action in mitigation before sentencing. Clare said Hood had resigned from the police after fifteen years of otherwise good service and risked losing his pension. “It is not a case where his position as a police officer was used in order to facilitate the fraud,” he pointed out. “His career is in ruins.” Hood is now pursuing a career in plumbing.

Potts defended Marsh by saying that he, too, had already suffered from his actions. His own insurers are refusing to renew their contract with him when it expires and his bank withdrew its overdraft facility. His business employs 21 people and Potts cited Marsh’s sponsorship of Great Yarmouth In Bloom as amongst evidence he supported his local community.

Judge Alasdair Darroch told Marsh that he did accept the man was attempting to help his friend. He sentenced Marsh to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service. He was more critical of Hood:

“As a police officer you know the highest possible standards are demanded by the public. You have let down the force. You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison.”

A Super Bowl Catch, Painted Fuse Boxes And Faith

Submitted by: Johnny Cyreous

For many, faith is an uneasy concept to grasp. In business it is rarely a topic for discussion. For the prejudiced and uninformed, faith has been used as an antagonist agent. Take for example what I recently found at a quote website I visited. The quote read, The alleged short-cut to knowledge, which is faith, is only a short circuit destroying the mind. There were an enormous amount of positive quotes about faith that out numbered the few like this one which neither educated nor edified. I pondered the words and reflected for a moment on the poor soul who anonymously left the quote. I felt sorry for this person for if they only understood the real intent of the concept faith they would instead be so inspired, so encouraged, so filled with hope, and empowered.

Consider faith outside the context of religion for just a few moments if you can. My selected quote today is from one of the 66 books found in the bible. It is believed to be written by the apostle Paul. A secular reading of it says: Faith is the assured expectations of things hoped for, the evident demonstrations of realities though not beheld. – Hebrews 11:1. There is no mystique here for me, no magical, mystical convoluted words to be easily misrepresented. It is a clear and simple definition. One that could be, and should be put in our secular dictionaries.

However for those that may be stuck with this wrong-faith-concept let me de-mystify it for you. Saying it another way, knowing for sure that the thing(s) hoped for will happen is faith. Entire businesses are built on this concept. For example, a metal paint shop such as one I worked in when I was 18 years of age assembles painted fuse boxes. At one end of the line is the finished fuse box; at the beginning of the line is a flat sheet of stamped metal that has to look like a fuse box when it is finished. When I worked there the boss had faith that his sheet metal was going to look like a fuse box at the end after the workers applied their skills and labor to that box that passed through the moving conveyor belt. It always came out a fuse box at the end. I know it because I was there and I witnessed it. I did my part by applying the paint to the surface of that box.

Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for did that not happen in the case of the painted fuse boxes? Was faith needed to build those fuse boxes? Yes at first definitely. Well perhaps there were some doubters, but the boss knew it would happen for a certainty, and so did the linemen I worked with. Now let me throw some confusion into it. The day I started the job, it took faith for me to believe that a few men and women along with me, were going to turn that sheet metal into a painted fuse box outside of a few minutes. But, as I got used to the job, I had proof certain that we would produce such an object, and so knowledge did away with faith. I no longer needed faith as certain knowledge continued to grow and replaced faith.

The greater the proposed invisible object to build, the greater the faith required. Imagine walking onto a submarine base where they actually build the nuclear class attack subs, or imagine walking into a jet airplane manufacturing company like Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and realizing for the first time that you would have to contribute to the building of the aircraft. Imagine the faith that recquires?

Another example is a simpler one, but one that brings more of the miracle aspect into it. You can buy a packet of corn seeds in a store. You can build a mound of soil in your garden and plant those seeds in the mound. You can water that ground for 6 to 12 weeks and you are going to get tall stalks of corn come the end of that growing season. You had faith it would happen, or you applied faith in the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld to put it the way the good book says. Now in this case there is a miracle going on because you really don t know how this seed turns into a tall corn stalk. That s why it will always take a small degree of faith to grow something because there is never a certain knowledge that can displace faith. You will never know how that seed turns into a corn stalk. However, a biologist or a horticulturist would posses more knowledge and would require less faith to believe.

With every grain of knowledge one acquires, a piece of faith is no longer needed. For example, let s say that cousin Jenny heard about this phenomenon of growing a corn stalk out of seeds from her cousin Earl. She knows Earl to be a man with sterling qualities and he has never lied. That might be enough for Jenny to believe. She still would need faith, but less of it to believe.

Well now let s talk about the reasons why faith can do remarkable things like inspire, or encourage, or empower someone. It s because faith is a building block, plain and simple. We don t need it forever, but as observed it is essential for a while till it gets us to certain knowledge about a thing, and then more knowledge. When we have a dream to do something, without faith we can not get it done. That s why it is so destructive for someone to say faith is only a short circuit destroying the mind. Faith is essential for the mind to grow; otherwise we would eliminate many possibilities in life. Faith is needed as we hope for the thing we believe will happen. Faith says, Well, I saw a plant grow, so this is possible too! Just words of faith that one speaks to one s self are the coaching words that are needed to sustain us through times that may seem dark. I remember watching the Super Bowl last week. The favored Patriots lost to a 5 seed pick team (the Giants) who worked their way back by winning their last 10 road games. In the final quarter when it was a 3 point difference, the Pats were leading, Eli Manning of the Giants threw this wild pass after re-appearing from out of a pack of Patriot defenders only to be caught almost miraculously by David Tyree. This miraculous catch set up the easy last Giant touchdown which won them the game. This pass and catch has been called the miraculous play on

NFL.com

. Take a moment and view the highlight on film.

This game illustrates more than any way I can explain the benefits of applying faith. The Giants saw in their mind the invisible possibility of winning. Even though they were down and out ready to lose by 3 points that Giants had faith and they used that temporary stepping stone to get them their win at Super Bowl 42 this year.

It is difficult to believe in things we can not see. Think about it, 100 years ago you would have thought it was crazy that someone could have electricity, drive in a car, fly a plane, travel to the moon and back. It s amazing! Computers that can talk to each other instantaneously (Instant Messaging), wireless telephone devices that you can talk to people anywhere on the planet as you walk down the street, all these things would require immense faith 100 years ago. Most people would say, no way you can t do that. Can you see the enormous advantage in having faith? If all of mankind were without it, we would have never progressed to the level we are with inventions. Someone saw the vision of such things in their minds and though they did not exist, they had assured expectations that it would come to be. But it is so hard to believe in things we can not see. Faith gives us a stepping stone. It says I m sure .

Now if you are bold enough, bring religion back into our discussion for one moment. Do you see how important it is to have stepping stones to believe some of the things you are asked to believe in your religion? It takes a huge amount of faith. But I will promise you this, keep applying faith to that which is not seen and you will see with your own two eyes miracles that even our greatest elders of times past have longed to see but were denied. We are living in a time of miracles. You haven t seen anything yet! Keep applying faith and watch your strength grow. You too will become empowered, and when you do you will strengthen your brothers.

Swiss reject single health insurance

Monday, March 12, 2007

24 of 26 Swiss Cantons rejected the proposal for a single health insurance system, in which premiums would be based on income and wealth. The vote on Sunday was the latest in a series of attempts to cut rising costs and ease the financial burden on citizens.

Around 71% of voters rejected the reform. Turnout was at about 46%, slightly above the Swiss average.

As expected, voters in the main German-speaking part of the country turned down the planned reform, which was supported by the centre-left but opposed by the centre-right as well as the business community, parliament and the government.

Opposition in the French and Italian speaking regions was less pronounced. The cantons Jura and Neuchâtel in the French speaking regions voted in favor of the proposed reforms.

Health insurance premiums are higher in southern and western Swiss cantons than in German-speaking areas.

The Swiss Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin said an important part of the Swiss Population appeared to be opposed to “a revolution” in health insurance but he said that he wanted current reforms currently under discussion in the Swiss Parliament to go ahead. He called on all sides, especially health insurers and the cantonal authorities, to make efforts to reduce spending on health insurance and aim for a greater cost efficiency. Currently Switzerland has 87 private insurers providing mandatory basic health care coverage for Swiss residents under a 1996 law. But costs have sky-rocketed. Over 100,000 people are not covered by health insurance due to non payment.

To win the battle of the cost of health care, everyone must place his or her private interests behind the interests of the general public. -Pascal Couchepin at a news conference

Opponents to the initiative argued that a single insurance system would lead to complacency and create a two-tier system, in which the wealthy would be the only ones available to afford to have additional private insurance coverage.

Supporters of the initiative said a single health insurer would increase the system’s efficiency and allow for annual savings of at least 300 million Swiss Francs (about $245 million) in administrative costs. Currently, the funding system is unbalanced, since many clients on low incomes use state subsidies to pay their premiums, according to the Green Party and the Social Democrats.

The initiative to unite all the insurance companies and introduce premiums based on wealth and income was the most recent in a series of attempts over the past ten years to reduce the public spending on health care. A proposal, similar to this recent proposal, to modify the funding system of the health insurance companies was rejected by 73% of voters in 2003.

Switzerland has the most expensive health system in Europe. Switzerland’s expenditure on health care was 11.6% in 2005, in front of Germany and France but behind the United States.

David S. Touretzky discusses Scientology, Anonymous and Tom Cruise

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

David S. Touretzky, prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology, discussed his opinions on the recent Internet backlash against the Church of Scientology in an interview with former Scientologist and Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull. The recent conflict on the Internet between critics of Scientology and the Church has been spurred on in declarations by a nebulous Internet entity using the name Anonymous that the Church of Scientology “will be destroyed”. Anonymous has directed recent protests at Scientology centres across the world, which have attracted significant numbers of individuals supporting the cause. In recent e-mail correspondence with Wikinews, a representative of the Church of Scientology declared that the Church considers the activities of Anonymous to be illegal, and that Anonymous “will be handled and stopped”.

Touretzky, a research professor in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University, has been a prominent critic of the Church of Scientology since mid-1995, and has been protesting against Scientology vociferously since then; he has also run websites that publish material that Scientology wishes to keep suppressed from the public eye, such as extracts from Scientology’s formerly-confidential Operating Thetan (OT) materials. Touretzky views the actions of the Church of Scientology as being “a threat to free speech”, and has endured harassment by the Church of Scientology for his activities.

The Church of Scientology continues to suffer damage to its public reputation through increased exposure on the Internet and vocal protests by Scientology critics such as Prof. Touretzky. A recent event that focused intense attention on Scientology’s totalitarian attitude was the leak of an internal Church of Scientology propaganda video to the Internet video sharing site YouTube, in which celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise spoke heavily in Scientology’s jargon and stated that that “we [Scientology] are the authorities” on resolving the difficulties of humanity. The declaration of war by Anonymous followed shortly after this leak, in the form of a video posted to the Internet.

The ongoing dispute, cast by some as Scientology versus the Internet, brought Scientology terms such as “SP” (Suppressive Person, an enemy of Scientology) and “KSW” (Keeping Scientology Working) into general usage by non-Scientologists from the late 1990s onwards; increased attention has been drawn to Scientology by the release of the Cruise video in addition to media coverage. This focus has caused an even greater propagation of these terms across the outside world, as Touretzky comments in the interview.

Wikinews asked Prof. Touretzky about the impact that the activities of Anonymous will have on Scientology, the public relations effect of the Tom Cruise video, the recent departure of individuals from the Church of Scientology’s executive management, the strategies that Anonymous will employ and Touretzky’s experiences of picketing the Church.

Thonotosassa Inner Ear Infection

By Michael Major

Maintaining the health of children is critical, and chiropractic therapy has proben to be quite effective. Additionally, a variety of childhood diseases can be treated by its regular use. Examples of this are the treatment of childhood asthma, chronic ear infection and colic.

In fact, the use of chiropractic therapy on children is often a preferred course of treatment because it does not produce the side effects that many medications can. Curing childhoos disease through chiropractic is a very safe alternative to some traditional therapies. As chiropractic practices increase, many studies have been done to prove how well it works on children. The Journal of Chiropractic Research performed a study which led to some remarkable conclusions. A finding of that particular study showed that children raised with Chiropractic care had decreased reported instances of a variety of childhood ailments. As a matter of fact, it was found that children who participated in chiropractic treatment had only a 20% likelihood of contracting an ear infection, while those whose medical history did not include it had a 69% chance of getting one.

The study suggested similar statistics for other diseases, including both colic and asthma. In many areas, chiropractic treatment often obviates the need for medicinal intervention. Chiropractic is increasingly becoming sound practice, it is turned to for treatment of many childhood ailments so that reverting to antibiotics can be avoided, and it is very popular as a way to maintain overall childhood health. In fact, medical research has shown that the use of antibiotics in treating childhood ear infections is actually ineffective. It has been proven that the time for an ear infection to clear in a child is not shortened by antibiotics; in fact, with or without antibiotics the infection clears in about the same amount of time.

A prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria is one of the dangerous side effects of overuse of antibiotics. The risk of contracting antibiotic resistant bacteria can make the use of the antibiotic more dangerous than the original ailment was. Understanding the way that chiropractic works will allow you to see that choosing it as a first-line for of treatment for many ailments makes a lot of sense. When your body is failing in some way, it is often because your organs are working incorrectly or inefficiently.

For instance, if a nerve that leads to the stomach is not working correctly, it can cause symptoms like colic. Similarly, you can have symptoms you may associate with asthma if a nerve leading to your lungs is not functioning properly. Many painful childhood diseases can be cured by simply addressing this situation. The symptoms that are experienced by many of these ailments are cured by chiropractic when the nerve function is corrected. Quite simply, this allows the body to function better, and allow it to heal itself. Chiropractic therapy is quite advantageously used to cure many symptoms and ailments in both adults and children in a safe, natural way.

The body can fight off invasions by various ailments by continous use of chiropractic way, and the healthier the body is, the more it will continue to heal itself. The goal of allowing the body to age most gracefully and of reducing any possible harmful intervention with medication and invasive procedures can be obtained by beginning chiropractic treatment in childhood as a preventative measure.

Bob Barker to retire as host of U.S. gameshow The Price Is Right

Friday, November 3, 2006

After hosting the United States gameshow The Price Is Right, Bob Barker has decided to call it quits and retire from being the gameshow’s 35 year-long host. Barker plans to end the show in June of 2007.

“I will be 83 years old on December 12 … and I’ve decided to retire while I’m still young,” jokes Barker. Explaining why he has been on American televisions for over 50 years, Barker said “I’ve gone on and on and on to this ancient age because I’ve enjoyed it.”

“I’m just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me. I might be able to do the show another year, but better [to retire] a year too soon than a year too late,” added Barker.

Barker first started to host gameshows in 1956 when he hosted Truth or Consequences and started to host The Price is Right on September 4, 1972 where, to this day, he has been the gameshow’s host.

Barker is hinting the possibility of appearing in a few movies, but jokes around saying he will not appear in any “nude scenes.”

“I refuse to do nude scenes. These Hollywood producers want to capitalize on my obvious sexuality, but I don’t want to be just another beautiful body,” said Barker in a joking manner.

CBS calls Barker a “legend” and an “entertainment icon.”

The first thing he plans to do after retiring is “sit down for maybe a couple of weeks and find out what it feels like to be bored,” said Barker.

“Bob Barker is a daytime legend, an entertainment icon and one of the most beloved television personalities of our time,” said Leslie Moonves, the chief executive of the CBS Network who also added that the network plans to do a special television show in Barker’s honor, but Barker will not be saying a special goodbye to his viewers saying he will say what he always does at the end of every show; “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.”

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank the television viewers, because they have made it possible for me to earn a living for 50 years doing something that I thoroughly enjoy. They have invited me into their homes daily for a half a century,” said Barker.

Northrop Grumman and Airbus parent EADS defeat Boeing for $40 billion US airtanker contract

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Northrop Grumman and Airbus parent company European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company EADS N.V. (EADS) have unexpectedly defeated Boeing for a US$40 billion (GB£20.1 billion) contract to supply the United States Air Force (USAF) with 179 new aerial refueling tankers at a rate of 15 a year.

It is the biggest contract of its kind since the Joint Strike Fighter program. That contract was fought for between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, Lockheed ultimately winning the contest.

JSA Research defence analysist Paul Nesbit said that Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) operations across the aircraft’s fifty-year service life could push the value of the contract as high as US$100 billion. Northrop Grumman CEO Ron Sugar said in an interview “Everyone told us we were crazy, that we had no chance. But we took a big swing and in this case, we hit a home run.”

USAF officials said that the contract had been awarded based on competence, track record and competitive pricing, with UBS analyst David Strauss saying “The key decision was the amount of fuel the bigger plane could carry. In the armed services, you can never have too much gas in the air.” USAF also denied that creating jobs in the US was a factor; job supply had been the reason Boeing were expected to win, with the airframer promising 44,000 new positions at 300 suppliers in 40 states.

The Northrop Grumman KC-45 tankers – more often known as KC-30s – are based on the Airbus A330 MRTT. The first four aircraft will be assembled at the main Airbus factory in Toulouse, France but by 2010-11 production of the remainder will be carried out at a facility in Mobile, Alabama. This is thought likely to create 1,500 to 2,000 jobs and support 25,000 others. 60% of the parts will be supplied by domestic manufacturers. EADS had previously announced plans to shift much production to the US due to the current weakness of the dollar.

General Arthur Lichte, head of USAF’s Mobility Command, said it is hoped the first aircraft can be tested in 2010 and in operation three years afterwards. USAF’s chief of staff General Duncan McNab stated “The tanker is the number-one procurement priority for us right now. It is the first step in our critical commitment to recapitalize our aging fleet to move, supply, and position assets anywhere.”

At a time when our economy is hurting, this is a blow not only to our state, but more than 40 states across the country who would help build this national plane.

There is still a possibility of Boeing challenging the decision; Boeing themselves were successfuly challenged by Lockheed and Sikorsky in 2006 over a US$10 billion contract to supply search and rescue helicopters to the Pentagon. A statement by Boeing given by Boeing spokesman William Barksdale said “Obviously we are very disappointed… Once we have reviewed the details behind the award, we will make a decision concerning our possible options.”

Washington senator Patty Murray, who hails from the same state where Boeing bases their commercial airliner operations, said in a critical statement “We are shocked that the Air Force tapped a European company and its foreign workers to provide a tanker to our American military. At a time when our economy is hurting, this decision to outsource our tankers is a blow to the American aerospace industry, American workers and America’s military.”

Washington representative Norm Dicks said he too was “shocked”, releasing a statement saying “This decision is even more disappointing because the Air Force had previously favored the Boeing 767 tanker and we were prepared to move forward with the production of 100 tankers in 2003, before the process was halted due to the Boeing scandal. I regret that it has taken so long to respond to what was—and is—an urgent need to replace these older aircraft. And even more regrettable is the decision to award the contract to Airbus, which has consistently used unfair European government subsidies to take jobs away from American aircraft workers.”

Kansas senator Sam Brownback said “It’s stunning to me that we would outsource the production of these airplanes to Europe instead of building them in America. I’ll be calling upon the Secretary of Defense for a full debriefing and expect there will be a protest of the award by Boeing.” Todd Tiahrt, a Kansas representative, said “We should have an American tanker built by an American company with American workers. I cannot believe we would create French jobs in place of Kansas jobs.”

A group of Washington politicians released a joint statement saying “We will be asking tough questions about the decision to outsource this contract… At a time when our economy is hurting, this is a blow not only to our state, but more than 40 states across the country who would help build this national plane.”

Alabama Governor Bob Riley said “To say this is a great day for Alabama is a monumental understatement. This will go down in history as one of our greatest days.” Ralph Crosby, EADS’s North America CEO and ex Northrop executive commented the business has “committed our full resources to support this vital program for our prime contractor, Northrop Grumman, the Air Force, and the war fighters that this system will serve for decades to come. We already have begun the work necessary to expand our U.S. industrial footprint in support of this important program.”

EADS chief executive Louis Gallois commented “This major selection is a win-win for our customers, for allied industrial cooperation and for EADS. It signals a quantum-leap forward in our commitment to the US defence customer, reflects and supports our global strategy to increase EADS’s industrial presence in key markets and our goal to balance the company’s defence and commercial portfolios.” General Arthur Lichte said “This will be an American tanker, flown by American airmen with an American flag on its tail and, every day, it will be saving American lives.

Boeing had initially agreed to lease 100 tankers, but in 2003 a scandal erupted when it emerged that Boeing executive Michael M. Sears arranged a job for USAF official Darleen Druyun while negotiations were still underway. Both served jail sentences for corruption charges and a competition was opened up to award a new contract.
