Militants in Pakistan torch NATO, US military vehicles

Sunday, December 7, 2008

Pakistani officials have reported that vehicles supplying NATO forces in Afghanistan have been set on fire by suspected militants. The attack occurred in the northwestern city of Peshawar which lies on Pakistan’s North-Western frontier at 0230 local time.

Sources claim that more than 250 gunmen using rockets, grenades and AK-47s overpowered the guards setting the Humvees on fire. The Pakistani officials claim that 96 trucks, 70 Humvees and 6 containers were destroyed.

In November this year, 12 lorries carrying Humvees were captured by the militants in the famous Khyber Pass. The convoy was also carrying food and aid to the NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Volunteers endure bed-rest study

Tuesday, March 22, 2005Volunteers began a 60 day bed-rest marathon on March 19 to study simulated weightlessness effects on women astronauts. The study, Women International Space Simulation for Exploration(WISE), is conducted at the MEDES Space Clinic in Toulouse, France.

The 12 women, selected from 1600 applicants hailing from France,Great Britain, Germany, Finland, The Netherlands, Poland and the Czech Republic began the study after a 20 day screening for baseline comparison data as the study progressed.

The women will conduct all activities from eating, bathing, and reading while lying in hospital beds tilted headfirst at a six degree angle. This particular position, called head-down tilt bed rest was determined from previous studies to remove the vertical load of gravity on the body, inducing changes similar to what astronauts in a genuine weightless environment experience [1].

Long term exposure to weightlessness creates a number of physiological and psychological problems in astronauts such as:

 • Reduced capacity for physical exertion
 • Muscle atrophy
 • Affects of confinement and isolation
 • Impaired circulatory function

A total of 24 women will participate in the study. A second group of 12 will join in September.

Three groups of eight women each will be studied over the course of the two campaigns of bed rest. One group will serve as a control, receiving no specific treatments, the second will exercise, while the third will receive nutritional supplements.

The study is designed to fill in gaps of knowledge on the differences between men and women during extended weightlessness. It also aims to develop countermeasures for reducing the debilitating effects of long spaceflights.

Participating agencies in the study include the European Space Agency, NASA, the French Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

Tornado touches down in Joplin, Missouri

Monday, May 23, 2011

A tornado touched down yesterday in Joplin, Missouri, causing widespread damage. At least 89 were killed.

The path of the tornado was reported to be from one half to three quarters of a mile wide. City spokeswoman Lynn Onstot estimated the path to be nearly four miles long; Jasper County emergency management director Keith Stammer put its length around six miles.

You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That’s really what it looked like.

Witnesses described entire blocks of buildings destroyed. Steve Runnels of the National Weather Service said “We have reports of significant structural damage to strong buildings. Automobiles have been flipped, bark was stripped off trees.”

Among the properties damaged was a local hospital, St. John’s Regional Medical Center. Some patients were hurt, and all were evacuated to other regional hospitals. The local high school, Joplin High School, was also hit. Describing the damage, its principal, Kerry Sachetta, said “You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That’s really what it looked like. I couldn’t even make out the side of the building.”

Joplin has a population of about 50,000.

President Barack Obama has ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support state and local efforts in response and recovery. He issued a statement with condolences to the families of victims.

US Congress House panel OKs big cut in public broadcasting funds

Saturday, June 11, 2005

A House subcommittee voted Thursday to sharply reduce the federal government’s financial spending for Fiscal Year ’06, including eliminating taxpayer funds that help produce such shows as Sesame Street and Arthur.

The spending cutbacks far exceeded even those requested by the White House. Among initiatives slated for reduction are $39 million for conversion to digital programming and $50 million for upgrading PBS’s aging satellite technology.

The subcommittee also acted to eliminate federal money for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a body created by Congress to pass funds on to public broadcasters. The CPB would see a 25 percent reduction in next year’s budget, down from $400 million to $300 million, funds that currently account for 14.9% of all public broadcasting revenues[1].

Ideological concerns over publicly-financed content have recently become a point of contention for the Republican-controlled CPB. The day after the new budget was approved, CNN obtained an internal memo by NPR’s executive vice president Ken Stern that blamed the cuts on “recent public turbulence caused by CPB chairman Ken Tomlinson’s irresponsible attacks on public broadcasting.” Stern’s memo also told staffers the cut would not hurt NPR directly because it receives little direct support from the CPB. Instead, he emphasized, smaller local stations that rely upon federal dollars are most likely to be affected, which could in turn take a bite out of regular dues and fees, NPR’s largest revenue source.

Under the budget, the Ready to Learn program’s $23 million appropriation for children’s shows is rescinded in its entirety. John Lawson, president of the Association of Public Television Stations, said the cut was retribution for an episode of “Postcards From Buster” featuring a pair of lesbian parents from Vermont. A spokesman for the Appropriations Committee, John Scofield, denied the claim.

“Ready to Learn was one of more than 50 programs terminated in the spending bill,” he told the New York Times. “It might be a nice program to do, but not in a flat budget with large budget deficits. We felt the same way about 49 other programs.”

Overall, the cuts would signal the most dramatic cutback of public broadcasting since Congress created the CPB in 1967. The spending bill is expected to pass the Appropriations Committee and the House, but final legislation will be negotiated with the Senate.

Gluten Free Desserts

For gluten intolerance people it is difficult to attend any parties or events or family gatherings or holidays where every one enjoys there time around the different foods served to them as they are restricted to have them. The same problems arises when an event is planned where people gather and obviously food that should be served must be relish by everyone including the food sensitive people and no one must be left out. And it is very challenging because gluten intolerance people cannot gobble down anything as the normal people do. They have their own special diet.

Desserts that are generally including ingredients like wheat, sugar, dairy, nuts, soy or eggs are strictly prohibited for the gluten intolerance people. There is nothing to panic because local specialty food markets have substitutes on hand for those ingredients that are needed by people with food intolerances. People suffering from celiac can also have desserts, as the substitutes like wheat-free flour, phyllo, and potato starch for baking desserts are available and can be eaten by the gluten intolerance people. You will also come across several ingredient packages that will enclose recipes for their use in desserts. That makes your work a little easier. You can also get non-dairy ingredients that are available for those with milk intolerance. There are many recipes that require sugar and for the diabetics, it is strictly restricted. There are large varieties of sugar substitute choices including artificial sweeteners, honey, molasses, or stevia and fortunately most of the recipes can be cooked with these substitutes. To make your desserts extra special it is desirable that you add fresh spice. Yes, spice in the dessert sounds a little different to your ears but there are desserts that use spice that brings a different taste to that particular dessert. Ensure that you have written the date of the spice on the containers when purchased so as to know how long it has been in the kitchen. Though, nowadays food suppliers are becoming more and more cooperative in dating the products with “use by” or at least mentioning the production dates on the container, which makes purchasing easier.Fruit desserts are the best choice as it can be eaten by everyone and for that you need to have fresh local ingredients. But unfortunately seasonal fruits and veggies are not to be had all the year-round in all areas and even if they are on hand it is for sure that they may not be fresh enough to be wholesome. Anyway, fruit desserts are prepared in an eye-catching arrangement, and served in fancy dishes like wine glasses or goblets to make them extra special for the holidays. Acquiring the knowledge about the substitutes and the food that gluten intolerant people can eat makes the event more easy and enjoyable for everyone.

Parajet Skycar expedition takes off from London to Timbuktu

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Two explorers have set off from Knightsbridge, London Wednesday morning (0900 GMT) in a propeller-powered dune buggy heading for the Sahara. Giles Cardozo, age 29, from Dorset, with chief pilot and expedition leader Neil Laughton, age 45, an ex-SAS officer, will fly and drive the amazing two-seater vehicle more than 6,000-km (3,750-miles) to fabled Timbuktu on February 20.

“I just can’t wait to see their faces when we fly in and start playing football with them. I don’t think they will be able to believe somebody in a flying car has just visited them,” ‘extreme golfer’ Mr Laughton said before the departure. Timbuktu (Timbuctoo; Koyra Chiini: Tumbutu; French: Tombouctou) is an isolated city in Tombouctou Region, in the West African nation of Mali. They will traverse Europe and Africa about 42 days to arrive at the city in Mali, West Africa before returning home via Senegal.

The home-made 450-kilogram Skycar has been designed by Cardozo in just 18 months. It is the world’s first road legal bio fuelled flying car. It is a four cylinders modified Rage Motorsport off-road racing buggy which was approved by the government last month. It runs on bioethanol and is powered by a modified 140bhp Yamaha R1 superbike engine with a lightweight automatic continuously variable transmission from a snowmobile.

The team invested about £250,000 ($380,000) to make the 1000cc engine Skycar desert-proof. In its maiden voyage, the flying car will be escorted by up to 13 people convoy including an eight-wheel truck, two Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s and several motorbikes. It has left London’s Sheraton Park Tower hotel, heading through the capital to Dunsfold airfield in Surrey.

The team had initially planned to take the air route across the English Channel, but the 35km flight was vetoed by aviation authorities. Skycar is required by law to obtain a license from Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), including a permit from the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA). Skycar spokeswoman, Charlie Bell, however clarified that the team was “in liaison with the CAA and they are looking to finalize the permit,” adding that it is in order for the rest of the trip.

The Skycar will thereafter fly over the high-altitude Pyrenees near Andorra, and would cross over the 14-km (nine-mile) Strait of Gibraltar. The prepared journey also includes the route through Mauritania, Atlas Mountains in Morocco and into Mali. It will further cross the harsh environment of Sahara’s remote “Rub’ al Khali” (empty quarter), for up to two weeks amid real fears of terrorist attacks.

The expedition will not have an easy task, especially since the Skycar will be tested to the limits amid punishing operating environments and weather conditions. “Clearly the reliability of the car is crucial,” said Mr Laughton. “We’re going to have to cope with wind chill temperatures as low as -30 deg C and blistering heat of up to 50 deg C. But it’s been fully tested at a secret location and it 100 per cent works,” he added.

The Parajet Skycar is a prototype flying car. It was developed by British paramotor manufacturer Parajet. The flying car utilizes a paramotor and a parafoil attached to a modified dune buggy to achieve sustained level flight. Should the engine fail, the vehicle can glide back to the ground. Should the canopy rip, an emergency reserve parachute would be deployed. It requires three minutes to convert it from a car to an aircraft. The prototype runs on biodiesel and is fully road-legal.

In 2004 British engineer Giles Cardozo, a paramotor manufacturer, has invented a fan-powered flying car to prove the Skycar is real and works. “I started making a paramotor on wheels that you sit on and take off and it suddenly occurred to me, ‘Why not just have a car that does everything?’” Cardozo said. His Wiltshire-based company Parajet built the paramotor that the adventurer Bear Grylls did fly near Everest in 2008. In 1998, Grylls, aged 23, became the youngest British to ascend Mount Everest. In May 2007, Grylls and Cardozo departed from Pheriche, about 32 kilometres south of Mount Everest.

I thought this would be an interesting challenge… Timbuktu is an iconic and quirky destination.

Cardozo has claimed he may finally have made it. “I’ve been dreaming about making flying cars since I was a boy, thinking about all the ways it could be done and seeing how all the other people in the world have done it wrong. No one’s ever made one that really does work that you can go out and buy. But here’s the ultimate solution: it’s cheap, it’s safe, it works, all the technology’s already there. So I pushed ahead and thought, ‘We’ve got to do it’,” he said.

If the Skycar becomes successful, Cardozo’s company plans a limited production with a selling price of £35,000 to £40,000 for a standard model and £60,000 for a high-performance sports version. “It will be a serious aircraft but also a proper road machine, with acceleration to match your average sports car,” says Cardozo. “I’m not going to sell millions of them but even if we sell 20 we’ll be laughing,” he added.

The explorers, with the aid of sponsors, supporters and benefactor Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet OBE (known as ‘Ranulph (Ran) Fiennes’), have aimed to raise more than £100,000 for some charities including an African orphanage.

Problems Faced By Pune Real Estate In 2013

Problems Faced by Pune Real Estate in 2013

by

AnujGupta

Like other tier-I cities, a lot has been taking place on fro t of Pune\’s reality market. While there are, certainly, some positive things happening: the demand has remained high in this fiscal year. The majority of this demand, like previous years, has derived from the IT industry. It is the stability of the market that has garnered the interest of High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) to invest in the city. The absorption of commercial spaces has has remained stable, as compared to the residential properties. The inventories laying unused in the city are as old as 9 months. If the city overcomes the blocks that its real estate has been facing, the demand is expected to rise further, and this shall bring a boost to the property market here.

As per the report of Jones Lang LaSalle, the interest of the investors has remained high, like it was in the year 2012. The investment into commercial properties has seen a rise in 2013, thanks to the stability that Pune real estate has witnessed. With the development of Eastern Corridor, more offices have sprung up in the vicinity, and this has seen an upsurge in developer\’s interest in floating of new projects. Consequently, it directly affects the demand from buyers section. A 22-acre project by a realtor garnered the attention of an investors called Avenue Ventures, which has invested $6.5 million into the project.

This was about the positive turn of events. Now, have a look at the flip side too. The government has raised the stamp duty by 1%, making it as high as 7% of the property cost. This has been a big factor in toning down of the buyers\’ sentiments. Developers, who are already sitting over sets of vacant properties, are too perplexed to handle the increase in stamp duty. Another factor that has played wreck with developers\’ hope for sale is the long time taken for getting approvals for new constructions. To tell you the truth, it takes a year or two for them to get the consent, but by this time, the property rates get further escalated. So, in the end, it is the buyers section that has to pay the price. Like other cities, this is one of the biggest problems faced by Pune real estate today.

Another issue is related to the delinquency on part of developers themselves. A whole lot of them failed to pass the ownership in the name of the buyer to which they transferred property. The administration is now planning to take strict action towards the builders who fail to do the property conveyance deeds on time. Such a step shall bring about transparency in things.
