Should You Use A Linear Or Switching Power Supply For Your Analog Synth?

byadmin

If you’re looking for a power supply for your analog synthesizer, you may be trying to decide between a linear power supply and a switching power supply. Whether you’re building your own analog synth, putting together a modular, or buying a power supply for a used vintage keyboard, you want to make sure that you don’t have to deal with any power issues. Obviously digital synths can utilize either a linear power supply or a switching power supply with no problems.

What’s the difference? A linear power supply uses large capacitors that are recharged at the frequency of the incoming AC power to store its energy. A switching power supply uses a switching regulator to convert electrical power, and unlike a linear power supply, it constantly switches between full-on and full-off states and minimizes wasted energy by spending very little time in the high dissipation transitions. Every computer uses a switching power supply, and many other high-power electronics also use them.

While many synth buffs would recommend using a linear power supply over a switching power supply for analog synths, especially modular synths, the conventional wisdom on this topic seems to not have kept up with changing technology. Today, many models of switching power supply offer smaller, cooler, and significantly more efficient power than linear power supplies. Even when used with modular synths, a switching power supply can offer efficient and surprisingly quiet operation. Many old-school modular enthusiasts, in particular, argue against the use of linear power supplies for analog synths due to their perceived added noise, but a modern switching power supply is often just as quiet as a linear one. While they aren’t perfect for every application, there are many cases where a switching power supply is perfect for the job.

Tempted to build your own power supply? While many owners of modular synths see it as a more economical solution, a homemade power supply will lack the stability and safety of a good switching power supply. Think of all the modules in your rack. An errant surge or an internal power failure in a homemade power supply could easily destroy all of your synth modules. Don’ take that risk. Use a good switching power supply, and you won’t have to worry about that occurring.

If you’re looking for a power supply for your analog synth, there’s no reason not to choose a switching power supply. Despite the objections of many older synth enthusiasts, today a high-quality switching power supply can provide the same quiet power to your analog synths that a linear power supply can. Ignore the conventional wisdom that a switching power supply should never be used with an analog synth, and you’ll enjoy more efficiency with a switching power supply.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Benefits Of Video Conferencing

Benefits of Video Conferencing

by

Jamie Evans

Who would benefit from video conferencing?

Global companies or companies spread across different districts, counties or countries benefit from reduced travel costs and more frequent, easy and quality video meetings. Public sector organisations working across difficult geographical terrain such as the Scottish Highlands in or the unforgiving gravel paths in Devon and Cornwall will also benefit from the use of regular video conferencing rather than short but regular awkward journeys. Videoconferencing can be a very powerful collaboration tool when it is used in conjunction with data sharing applications and hardware. Participants of this type of meeting can see both each other and the PC presentation content. The content may be detailed digital imaging for physical research, educational resources, general presentation materials, or technical drawings amongst many other sources which might traditionally be presented in paper-based hand-out documentation. IP video solutions are useful across all levels of the organisation and across all vertical markets. With the use of quality integrated audio, video and web combined, providing cutting edge conferencing solutions tailored to anything from one-on-one to large conferences with ‘Question and Answer’ sessions and private meeting. There are even solutions specific to industries such as accounting, banking, insurance and legal. IP video conferencing enables numerous meetings between people based in different locations quickly with the use of high-quality audio and visual technologies. It also reduces the need for costly travel and saves a large amount of time which would otherwise be lost while travelling. Any organisation which works with or wants to work with remote clients or suppliers stands to benefit from videoconferencing. Video Conferencing Increases Productivity With the use of cutting edge IP Video conferencing systems, the solutions designed and installed transcend simple “talking heads” on a screen. With the introduction of software media applications, and the use of complex hardware design such as dual, multi screen or even Telepresence solutions, decisions are made faster; bringing products or services to market quicker; enabling you to stay ahead of your competitors. In-house communication is also enhanced, main branches are able to contact international offices with ease, collaboration with experts on various projects is effortless and director level messages can be recorded and streamed to any employee desktop at any time, with no difficulty (even remote or distant workers) – the use of video has now become a business opportunity and strategic advantage. With the arrival of new solutions technology, gone are the days of needing an onsite technician to set up a video conference now we have simple 4 pin entry and automated voice commands, taking no more time or effort than a simple telephone call or walk to the office next door. And in addition to saving time and money, videoconferencing, from one’s office or board room is a lot less stressful than a meeting after a day of taxi fairs and traffic, airport security, delayed flights and bungled hotel reservations. Video Conferencing Saves Money A more tangible benefit of using video to communicate is that you make substantial financial savings due to reduced travel and saved time. At a time of inflated costs for petrol, air travel and hotel accommodations, conducting video conference meetings makes more sense than it has in previous years. Video Conferencing Saves Time There are other significant benefits beyond increased productivity and reduced costs which include; reduction of “downtime” and increased “quality of life” for travelling management teams. Video conferencing should also be viewed as a way to enhance working relationships with remote colleagues and customers between personal visits and telephone calls. Customer relations may also be improved through the use of video conferencing. This is a great way to stay in touch with significant clients or those who are viewed as potential clients, without the need to make a physical visit or take up too much of the client’s time. Since the most effective meetings are those which can be attended in a face-to-face environment, video conferencing provides the ability to meet that goal while avoiding the inconvenience of travel, time and expense.

Charles Lazarus, founder of US-based toy retail giant Toys ‘R’ Us, dies at 94

Saturday, March 24, 2018

On Thursday, Charles Lazarus, the founder of United States toy retailer Toys “R” Us, died in Manhattan, New York, New York of respiratory failure. He was 94. His death came a week after Toys “R” Us announced that all of the stores were closing.

Toys “R” Us issued a statement in which they said, “There have been many sad moments for Toys “R” Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus. He visited us in New Jersey just last year and we will forever be grateful for his positive energy, passion for the customer and love for children everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charles’ family and loved ones.”

Michael Goldstein, who was a close friend and former Toys “R” Us chairman, said: “He was the father of the toy business. He knew the toys and loved the toys and loved the kids who would shop in the stores. His face lit up when he watched kids playing with toys.” In a phone interview Goldstein said that Charles Lazarus died in Manhattan.

Lazarus no longer held a stake in the chain, CNN reported. Lazarus took over his father’s bicycle repair shop in 1948 at the age of 25 and changed it to baby furniture. He opened the first Toys “R” Us store in 1957. Lazarus had remained its CEO until 1994.

10 Week Basic Dog Obedience Training Formula

Submitted by: Joanne Kok

Learning new things can be stressful for your dog especially in the beginning when concepts and teaching methods are new. If your dog refused to eat during the early stages of training, stop the program and have a play session or calm your dog until it is relaxed and begins to accept treats again. This process may require 3 to 4 sessions but it is worth going through it to develop your dog s positive attitude towards obedience.

Conduct 3 training sessions a day, each session lasting approximately 20 minutes while allowing at least 1 hour rest in-between sessions. In a 2-week period, there should be a total of 30 sessions.

Week 1 And Week 2

1) Teach your dog the heel command. Repeat a series of 3 to 5 circles and perform 5 series of 4-step heels per session.

2) Teach the sit and release command. Command your dog to sit , let it stay in the sit position for a moment then give the release command to release your dog from the sit . Repeat this series 5 times per session.

3) For each session, work on a series of 1 exercise and move to another exercise (i.e., work on one series of 4-step heel , then a series of sit and break , and finally a series of 4-step heels ).

Although dogs need repetition to learn a skill, you need a variety of exercises to keep them interested as they bore easily.

Week 3 And Week 4

1) Reinforce the heel command. Test the heel command from lessons learned from week 1 and week 2.

2) Reinforcing the sit and release command. Begin training your dog to hold the sit position starting from 5 seconds and gradually stretching the time to 10 seconds.

3) Begin teaching your dog the down command (use treats to lure your dog to teach it the command). Repeat the series 2 times per session in week 3 and 3 times per session in week 4.

Week 5 And Week 6

1) Continue to reinforce and test the heel , sit and release commands. Begin to include distractions when training heel and sit to train your dog to continue focusing on you even there are distractions.

2) Extend the concept of holding position to build patience by extending the sit from 5 10 seconds to 30 seconds 1 minute before releasing the sit command.

When you test your dog, you should repeat each test until it passes the test 3 consecutive times.

3) Start to reinforce the down command in week 5 by removing the treat and shoulder help. During week 6, begin reinforcing without any bodily assistance. You can reintroduce treats as the reward but do not tempt your dog. Only reward your dog after it has successfully completed the down command.

Training sessions may become more stressful for both you and your dog as you progress from the teaching phase and enter into the more difficult reinforcing phase. If you find a particular test too tough for both of you; stop the exercise and continue to practice the skills individually, you can repeat that particular test a few days later.

While the length and regularity of the sessions remain unchanged since the first week, the sessions are becoming less predictable and require varieties to make them as interesting and effective as they can be.

Week 7 And Week 8

1) While continuing to reinforce and test the heel , sit and release commands, don t forget to reinforce the down command as well. In 1 of every 3 sessions, add distractions to your basic commands. Improve down from a stand exercise with the down command.

2) Extend the time-span of the holding position and begin teaching the stay command.

3) Begin combining the different commands when training. Teach sit and down from your front and testing motion down and motion sit .

4) Start teaching the come command. Put your dog on sit/stay position, while walking backwards monitor the position holding skills. Body language plays an important role in teaching this command and sending the wrong signals sometimes causes your dog not to hold the position.

Week 9, Week 10 And After

1) Reinforce stay and come command. Always practice a short leash recall to reinforce the final finish position. Repeat at least 10 times per session. Come is the most important command but the least practiced of all the other commands.

2) Conduct test and reinforce all obedience commands. Practice all commands equally, working on each command as little as 1 or as many as 5 repetitions per series though you should avoid creating patterns.

Make exercises targeted towards your practical obedience application. Include distraction training in at least 1 out of every 3 obedience practice sessions.

10,000 refuse to pay U.S. taxes to protest Iraq war

Sunday, April 16, 2006

An estimated 10,000 conscientious objectors chose to withhold some or all of their U.S. income taxes due Monday, April 17, in protest to the use of US military power in Iraq. Some plan to instead donate their required tax to charity.

The Internal Revenue Service does not distinguish tax resistors from any other person behind on their taxes, and will apply the same fines and interest used against the other Americans who do not pay their taxes on time. Legal action is possible for extreme cases, but more commonly the IRS uses wage or bank account garnishing.

The tax protestors are well aware of these risks, yet refuse to pay on principle. Jim Allen, who served in the Army for 20 years and now teaches at St. Louis University, acknowledges that he will likely end up paying more due to the fines than he is refusing to pay today. “I am not opposed to paying taxes, but I am when such a large percent is going to pay for war. Sooner or later, they’re going to get their money, but until that happens, I’m going to continue protesting. This is too important not to.” Allen and his wife withheld $1300 – or 42% of what the couple owes the IRS, estimating this to be the proportion of his taxes that would otherwise go to military spending.

Other protestors simply refuse to file at all. Becky Pierce of Boston fills out a 1040 to determine her tax, but then donates that amount to charity without filing. Pierce says she follows in the footsteps of American protesters like Henry David Thoreau, a protester of the Mexican-American War who went to jail rather than pay taxes. “You need to have control of your money,” Pierce says. “I’m a self-employed carpenter. No one is reporting what I make. That’s why I can go unnoticed.”

Influential rock drummer Ginger Baker dies at age 80

Monday, October 7, 2019

Yesterday morning, English drummer Ginger Baker died in a hospital at the age of 80. The news came from the Twitter account in his name and was independently confirmed by Associated Press with his daughter Nettie Baker. On September 25, it was reported Baker was hospitalized in critical condition. Baker was widely known as the drummer and co-founder of the rock band Cream, an early supergroup.

Baker, a life-long smoker and former heroin addict, suffered from health problems for years. The list of ailments included hearing loss, osteoarthritis, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as heart problems for which he had surgery in 2016. Although known to have lived his latter years in South Africa, his daughter said he died in Britain without elaborating.

Ginger Baker was born Peter Edward Baker in Lewisham, London, in 1939. His father was killed in combat in 1943 during World War II. Baker — who was reportedly nicknamed Ginger due to his red hair — began playing drums in his teens. In a story he sometimes told, he had a habit of tapping on school desks. When an opportunity arose at a party, his classmates encouraged him to sit down at a drum set. “I’d never sat behind a kit before, but I sat down — and I could play! One of the musicians turned round and said, ‘Bloody hell, we’ve got a drummer’, and I thought, ‘Bloody hell, I’m a drummer’?”, he recalled in a 2009 retelling of the story to the The Independent.

Baker began his career as a drummer in jazz bands. He played with Acker Bilk and Terry Lightfoot. In 1962, when fellow drummer Charlie Watts was leaving Blues Incorporated for The Rolling Stones, Watts recommended Baker to be his replacement. Later, Baker found early success with rhythm and blues band The Graham Bond Organisation where he met bassist Jack Bruce.

In 1966, Baker, Bruce and singer/guitarist Eric Clapton, who was known from The Yardbirds, formed Cream. The rock trio was a massive success, selling tens of millions of records, including the first ever platinum certified album Wheels of Fire. Cream recorded four albums, then in 1968 disbanded with Baker and Bruce having developed a volatile relationship. Clapton and Baker were subsequently in another supergroup Blind Faith with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. Blind Faith recorded only one studio album but notably played before a crowd of a hundred thousand at a free concert in London’s Hyde Park.

In the 1970s, Baker moved to Nigeria where he established a studio and began playing polo. Here he collaborated with Fela Kuti and worked on Wings’s album Band on the Run with Paul McCartney of The Beatles fame. Later, he recorded with John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd.

Cream was inducted in 1993 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band reunited in 2005 for several London and New York concerts. Afterwards he moved to South Africa, and still lived there when the 2012 documentary Beware of Mr. Baker was filmed. Baker’s last recording was 2014’s Why? solo album. Baker retired from live performances in 2016 due to his ill health.

Paul McCartney wrote on Twitter, “Ginger Baker, great drummer, wild and lovely guy. We worked together on the ‘Band on the Run’ album in his ARC Studio, Lagos, Nigeria. Sad to hear that he died but the memories never will.”

“A very sad loss, and my condolences to his family and friends. A loss also for his contribution to music. He was well-grounded in jazz from very early on,” wrote Steve Winwood in a statement. “Beneath his somewhat abrasive exterior, there was a very sensitive human being with a heart of gold. He’ll be missed.”

Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones also reacted on Twitter, “Sad news hearing that Ginger Baker has died, I remember playing with him very early on in Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. He was a fiery but extremely talented and innovative drummer.”
